per cent compared with 57.1 per cent, respectively). Bacteriological cure rates were significantly higher in the enrofloxacin group on day 2 (odds ratio for cure was 3.32, P=0.002). Bacteriological cure rates on day 21 were similar in both treatment groups (90.5 per cent in the enrofloxacin group and 86.8 per cent in the non-treated group). Survival rates of cows at day 21 or survival in the herd at six months did not differ between the two treatment groups. Quarter milk production returned in 21.8 per cent of cows in the enrofloxacin group and 37.3 per cent of the untreated cows. Study weaknesses: The randomisation method used (odd and even cow identification numbers) was predictable and therefore open to bias, and no blinding was used. There were differing supportive therapies available to each cow (eg, frequent milking, fluid therapy) and it was unclear whether the uptake of these therapies was significantly different between treatment groups. Some of the assessments made were subjective (eg, estimated quarter milk production). Administration of the second dose of enrofloxacin and some outcome measurements were reliant on owner compliance. No explanation was given for cases that were excluded from the study, and it was also unclear whether the exclusions were balanced across the treatment groups. Large amounts of data were missing and no sample size calculation was performed before data collection took place.

Molecular detection of virulence genes and multi-drug resistance patterns in Escherichia coli (STEC) in clinical bovine mastitis: Alborz province, Iran
The aim of this study was to identify virulence genes and antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli isolated from bovine clinical mastitis in dairy herds in Iran. Sampling was done from 86 inflamed quarters of dairy cows in 8 commercial farms of Alborz province, Iran in summer 2015. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) virulence genes were detected by multiplex PCR and multi-drug resistance ...
متن کاملAcute Escherichia coli Mastitis in Dairy Cattle: Diagnostic Parameters Associated with Poor Prognosis
This study aimed to identify the diagnostic characteristics associated with poor prognosis and mortality in dairy cows with acute clinical Escherichia coli mastitis. On 17 dairy farms, 24 dairy cows with acute E. coli mastitis that had received therapeutic treatment were categorized into 2 groups by outcome: 17 cows that recovered (survivors) and 7 cows that died or were euthanized (non-survivo...

To determine the prevalence of bacterial mastitis in cattle, milk samples positive for California mastitistest (CMT) were cultured during a period of almost 4 years. The bacterial species isolated from 2904 milksamples studied were coagulase negative Staphylococcus sp. in 879 (30.27%) samples, Streptococcusagalactiae in 642 (22.11%), S. dysgalactiae in 332 (11.43%), E. coli in 295 (10.16%), Sta...
متن کاملEscherichia coli isolates' serotypes, genotypes, and virulence genes and clinical coliform mastitis severity.
Dairy cattle with clinical mastitis caused by Escherichia coli exhibit a wide range of disease severity, from mild, with only local inflammatory changes of the mammary gland, to severe, with significant systemic derangement. The present study was designed to examine the relationship between serotype and virulence genes of E. coli mastitis isolates, different levels of systemic disease severity,...
متن کاملThe toll-like receptor-4 (TLR-4) pathway and its possible role in the pathogenesis of Escherichia coli mastitis in dairy cattle.
Mastitis is one of the most costly production diseases in the dairy industry that is caused by a wide array of microorganisms. In this review, we focus on the Gram-negative Escherichia coli infections that often occur at periods when the innate immune defence mechanisms are impaired (i.e., parturition through the first 60 days of lactation). There is substantial evidence demonstrating that at t...
متن کاملPrevalence and molecular characterization of verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 in cattle and sheep in Shiraz-Iran
Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli have been associated with HUS, HC and TTP in human. We found recto-anal mucosal sample in sheep as well in cattle is the main site for E. coli O157 localization. 1246 E. coli isolates from 872 both healthy and diarrheic animals were analyzed, by screening for the presence of Shiga toxin-producing (VT 1 and VT 2) and intimin (eae) genes used Multiplex PCR. ...
